The Hometown Heroes Banner Program is a community pride program intended to salute the brave men and women who are currently serving and those who previously served in the military. The program will feature the individual’s military photo on a full-color cloth banner to be suspended from certain light poles located within the public right of way throughout the City of Bowling Green. Banners honoring our brave service men and women will be proudly displayed beginning this summer throughout Bowling Green.

The application period for requesting a Hometown Heroes banner for your veteran or active service member has now ended. We want to thank the veterans and active members for their dedication and service to our country. We also want to thank them and their family members for recognizing their service through this Hometown Heroes project. We anticipate the banners will be placed by the city late this Spring. You will be receiving an email announcing when we will have your small banners ready for pick up.

Depending upon interest level and available funding we hope to be able to another application period in the future.

The Bowling Green Community Foundation and the City of Bowling Green will be dedicating the Hometown Heroes banners on June 9, 2024, at a Community Band Concert in City Park at 7:00 PM. We will have a formal reading of the names of the veterans at the end of the concert. Please bring a lawn chair or blanket to sit on during the concert and reading. If it rains the concert will be moved into the Veterans Memorial Building at City Park. Also, please know parking at times gets tight so carpooling or walking to the park may be a great idea. We hope you will be able to join us.

We want to thank the Al and Mary Green Family Fund, Mayor Aspacher and his staff, Wood County Veteran Services, the various Veterans groups in Bowling Green, donors and others that helped make this project a reality.

Any questions regarding the BG Hometown Heroes program should be addressed by e-mail to bgcf@bgohcf.org or call (419) 352-0281 and your call will be returned in a short period of time.

The Hometown Heroes Veterans Banner project was unveiled at a ceremony on February 29, 2024, in the Bowling Green City Building attended by many veterans, parents of active duty military members, Mayor Mike Aspacher, and trustees and donors to Bowling Green Community Foundation.

Marcia Latta, president of the BGCF, said that the project will feature 30 x 60-inch banners featuring photos, names, and military branch of veterans and current service members that will be hung on poles in various locations around the city including downtown Bowling Green and in selected parks.  This project is part of the celebration of the Bowling Green Community Foundation’s 30th anniversary.
