The Bowling Green Community
Foundation was established in 1994 by the Charter Class of leadership BG as one
if its alumni projects. Founding
members were instrumental in determining the name of the Foundation, its
service area boundaries, its method of operation and its goals. It was also
decided to align the Foundation with the Toledo Community Foundation for
investment purposes but to maintain the BoardÕs control of fund raising and the
distribution of funds. Dorothy and
Ashel Bryan gave the Foundation Board $5,000 as seed
money to start its operation. The
Foundation has its own 501©(3) designation from the IRS, so that it might consider
the possibility of a Bowling Green Community Foundation independent of the
Toledo organization once its endowment reaches $3,000,000.
With the assistance of an
anonymous donorÕs gift of $25,000 and a legacy gift from John Davidson, the
Board raised $100,000 by June 30, 1996.
A plaque listing charter year donors is on display in the Bowling Green
Chamber of Commerce Office. The
Foundation awarded its first grants to nonprofit organizations in 1997 and
continues to do so annually in the spring of each year.
With encouragement from the
Foundation Board, other Bowling Green nonprofit
organizations have become part of the FoundationÕs family funds whose money is
invested and managed by the Toledo Foundation. You too may express your philanthropic interests by
investing in the Bowling Green Community FoundationÕs unrestricted fund or by
establishing a fund of your own which expresses how you wish to improve the
quality of life in the Bowling Green community. You may also choose to give to one of the already
established funds.
